Universal human rights lawyers Amal Clooney and Caoilfhionn Gallagher QC will lead an authorized group representing Maria Ressa, the award-winning Philippines journalist who has been repeatedly arrested this year on charges that experts state are designed to silence her.
“It’s clear that the government is manipulating the legislation to muzzle and threaten one of its most credible media critics,” stated the Committee to Protect Journalists after her arrest in March.”Maria Ressa is a brave journalist who’s being tortured for reporting the news and standing up to human rights abuses. We’ll try all available legal remedies to defend her rights and defend press freedom and the rule of legislation within the Philippines,” Clooney stated in a press statement released by London-based regulation agency Doughty Street Chambers saying the relationship.
Ressa is the co-founder and editor of online news site Rappler, which has earned fame for its unflinching protection of Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte and his brutal conflict on drugs. She has been charged a number of times on libel and tax evasion charges that critics have described as designed to silence unbiased media within the southeast Asian country. She worked for CNN before starting Rappler.
In an op-ed printed this year by Columbia Journalism Review, Ressa blamed Duterte of leading a systematic campaign in opposition to news organizations within the Philippines, and against herself.
“Authorized hassles can take up 90 % of my time; a day after our May midterm elections, I used to be arraigned for cyber libel in the morning and appeared for a case of securities fraud in the afternoon,” she wrote.
